Team Takes Seventh At Deerfield

Sophomore Kristian Schlicht must be enjoying life at the top. One week after winning in the 285-pound class at the Bernie Kane Classic at Madison East High School, the Monona Grove/McFarland co-op sophomore wrestler took second place at Saturday’s Deerfield Scramble at Deerfield High School.Schlicht helped the team to a seventh-place finish in the 18-team event.Schlicht won two preliminary matches to reach the championship bout. He defeated senior Charlie Ruege of Random Lake in a 3-2 decision and won another decision over sophomore Isaiah Hernandez of Kenosha Christian Life, 5-4.In the battle for first place, Schlicht took on Cullen Quick of Menasha, who had lost only four of 39 matches.Yet, Schlicht couldn’t bring home the victory as Quick pinned him in 1:23. Schlicht’s record stands at 18-10.Two other MGM wrestlers also earned second-place finishes.Freshman Cole Weaver defeated DeForest’s Jacob Larson in a fall at 3:20, and he was also awarded a win after an injury forfeit. In the championship bout, undefeated freshman Nicolar Rivera of Stoughton defeated Weaver in a fall at 1:32. Rivera has won 39 matches in a row. Weaver’s overall record is 24-10.In the 145-pound bracket, sophomore Zach Gunderson also took second place after beating Random Lake’s Joey Bock, who withdrew with an injury, and Stoughton’s Luke Mechler in a 13-5 major decision.Gunderson fell short of first place after losing a 12-10 decision to Nate Kane of Milwaukee Pius.Freshman Evan Rettkowski came through with a third-place showing at 106 pounds after beating Seth Mansfield of Brodhead/Juda in a pin at 5:01.Junior Connor Frasier was fourth at 195 pounds, senior Tysen White was sixth at 170 pounds, and sophomore Sam Tisue ended up eighth in the 182-pound group.Quinn Halstead was 13th at 138 pounds, and freshman Jonathan Schlaefer was 15th at 132 pounds.Monona Grove/McFarland ended with 367 team points. Stoughton took first place with 829, Kenosha Christian Life was second with 580, and Random Lake took third with 567.
